guess what? that '4 banger' has got lots of saab in its design (gm specifically mentions as much in their promo material), well the supercharged version anyway. :-) i have heard from a number of people who've driven the hi performance cobalt that it is quite fast and, with better tires and an alignment, would handle even better than it does now, which is to say, it already does pretty well in the twisties.
if i could, i would definitely put an ecotec engine in my saab. too bad it won't fit. :-(
as for the turbos at the tailpipes, guess what else? they work. there is a mustang forum where someone who posts there has driven one. it drives just fine and lag isn't a problem, despite all the conjecture and criticism all over the internet about the exhaust length, etc.
the reason they do it this way is for economy and packaging: it's simply cheaper and easier to do. and, surprisingly, apparently, it works just fine.
i guess it goes to show that theory and reality don't always intersect in the same place... ;-)
