Castrol LMA has always been "synthetic". I did some research on this and several other bulletin boards for older British cars have hashed this over, even contacting a Castrol rep. Castrol now advertises a "new formula" on the label which according to the rep, gives it a higher boiling point. It is completely compatible with the older Castrol LMA as well as with Girling/Lockheed seals we use in our VSaabs.
DOT 5 is silicone based fluid, used by the US Postal System and the military. It is NOT compatible with DOT3/4 fluid. DOT 5 is not hydroscopic, meaning that it doesn't absorb moisture. There have been huge discussions on this when it comes to older cars that aren't driven very much. I actually switched over to it in one of my Sonett's 10 years ago. In a nutshell- moisture gets into ALL brake systems through the seals, the cover, the vent, etc; the moisture HAS to go somewhere in the system; with DOT3/4 the fluid absorbs the moisture and must be changed out every so often; with DOT 5 it doesn't absorb the moisture so the moisture pools and sits at the lowest point in the system.
This latter point can be very dangerous because the pooled water can easily boil and cause catastrophic failure of the brake system.
So, use Castrol LMA as before.
