Bleeding Brakes

Had a rear brake cylinder start leaking a few weeks ago in my '73 Sonett III. Got a complete rebuild kit (and new shoes while at it) and did both rear brakes yesterday. Everything went together fine but the two of us must have bled the brakes 7 times and the pedal is still pretty mushy. I have the shoe adjuster pin pretty much maxed out to the point where there is some noticable drag on the drum with the pedal at rest. The drums still had well over the recommended thickness. The master cylinder was rebuilt a few years ago and shows no visible leaks. Pumping the pedal once gives me ever so slightly more pressure but subsequent pumping does nothing. My mechanic (a long time Saab only Indy who is very familiar with '60s & '70s era Saabs) made a few calls to some 96 & 97 old timers last night and they said the pedal bleeding never really worked well on the Lockheed system. Some suggested pressurizing from the reservoir or applying suction at the bleeders. I'm a bit afraid to pressurize the reservoir. That old plastic bottle is pretty brittle (are non NOS replacements available?). Any thoughts to get a bit better stopping power with the existing system? I don't expect modern braking but I feel it's bordering on not being safe as is.
