Coggs,
I don't ever seem to have a problem bleeding the brakes and get a hard pedal every time. What are you using for brake fluid? I use Castrol LMA and have for years with no problems. Some fluids can get very small trapped air bubbles that take forever to come out- this will give a soft pedal. Dot 5 Silicone fluid is prone to that. No other tricks- have someone push the pedal, open the screw, keep the pedal down, close the screw. The manual suggests an order- I forget off the top of my head...
I quit rebuilding rear cylinders years ago. They don't tend to last and you can get new ones for $16 these days.
