Weird sticking starter (long) Posted by pfrank [Email] (#549) [Profile/Gallery] (more from pfrank) on Sat, 9 Jun 2012 14:29:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am getting close on the over 10-year-long restoration of my originally owned Sonett III.
I have done extensive wiring upgrades, but have thoroughly checked out every circuit using an industrial DC power supply (still only 10A, though).
I installed a Group 35 battery yesterday and was going to crank the engine for the first time since being rebuilt (albeit back in 2002!). Plugs were pulled and I rolled the car some short distances in 4th gear to make sure the engine was free (it was). Fire extinguisher was ready and wrenches nearby in case I needed to quickly disconnect the battery.
When I turned the key to start, the starter motor turned the engine with no problem, but when I released the key, the engine continued to crank. I was able to remove the ground wire quickly from the battery and cranking stopped. I rolled the car a little to see if the starter was still engaged, but it did not seem like it was. Tried it again, and same thing happened.
Here is what I have now checked:
-Removed wire #50 (start signal) going to starter solenoid and checked with voltmeter while turning key. Shows 12V only when key is in start position, Zero V otherwise
-While engine is "auto-cranking", pulled wire #50 from behind ignition switch, doesn't stop cranking
-Slightly loosened starter mounting bolts (thinking pinion is in a bind on flywheel), still auto-cranks
-Removed starter from car and tested on bench with battery, all functions normal (starter motor turns and solenoid kicks in when 12V applied to #50 terminal on starter, drops out when removed)
-Reinstalled starter and hooked up a jumper to #50 terminal on solenoid so I could apply 12V directly (#50 wire from ignition switch was not connected to solenoid), still auto-cranks.
-Loosened starter mounting bolts again, used jumper per above, still auto-cranks.
The starter is a reman unit I bought from Hite Parts Exchange of Columbus in 2008, but this is the first time I have tried it. I will call them, but this is Sat pm and they are not open.
I am about at the end of my (starter) rope. While I have seen examples of sticking starters in various internet searches, they all seemed to be caused by a stray start signal getting to the solenoid either through a failed ignition switch or mis-wiring. I have verified this not to be my problem, so I guess I am down to pinion/flywheel stiction, but that just doesn't seem likely. Ideas? Many thanks!!
