You've done a very thorough job in troubleshooting this problem. The key is when you supplied a separate wire to the solenoid, bypassing all ignition switch wiring. When you did this, the starter stayed on. That points to a problem with the starter- a sticking solenoid to be more precise.
Remember the function of the solenoid- it is like a BIG relay. You apply 12V and it causes contacts to "make" that draw 100's of amps as Richie S pointed out. When you remove the 12V control voltage, the big contacts stick due to the large amount of current.
So don't fear or fret. Replace the starter.

PS- of course back in the old days, you could buy a new solenoid for your starter. Now that I think of it, you probably don't have a spare starter kicking around or you would have swapped it out already. I don't have one sitting here in front of me, but I seem to recall taking apart a Saab solenoid some years ago and cleaning the contacts. Could be an option for you. You got nothing to lose!
