Before you do that, you should take voltage measurements. What is the alternator voltage? Is the regulator regulating?
I've had two related problems in the last year, and neither was the alternator.
1. At the convention last year in NJ, I was having some problems with the Alt light coming on in my '74 Sonett. Long story short, it was traced to be an intermittent in the 3 wire harness from the alt to the regulator. It was the volt readings that led me to the problem.
2. Just last week the '73 Sonett that my youngest son uses for a daily driver wouldn't start, due to a weak battery. I charged it and it died again a couple of days later. I swapped in a new battery and then checked the voltage on the alternator- 17-18 Volts!!! High voltage had killed the battery. Turned out to be a bad regulator. I swapped in a spare and the voltage settled in around 14VDC, IIRC. Problem fixed. I pulled the can from the bad regulator and found the points burned. Easy to restore.
So before you pull your alternator, check it's voltage- it may be just fine.
PS- I don't think you need to pull the nose to change the alternator in a SIII. I think I've done it before. Might have removed the valve cover to gain room to pull it out.
