This morning I installed a one-way valve at the lowest point of the fuel line (betw tank and pump) and checked the pressure by T-ing off the fuel line by the carb:
ignition on - 1.8 psi
ignition on w/ jumper cables attached to fresh battery - 2.8 psi
engine at idle (no jumpers) - 1.8 psi

I know the battery was a bit low from cranking and cranking last week. Its also old. When I tried to start the car, it never fired but turned over okay. Same symptoms as when its hot and not starting - crank without fire. So I jumped it to my 9000's battery gave the fuel pump more power and the sonett engine cranked much faster and started within 2-3 seconds.

The one-way valve seems to be useless as the pressure gradually bleeds off when the sonett is shut off. I drove the car to warm it up, after which it restarted just fine (outside temp 72*). SO, I need to test it out on a hot day. And perhaps the battery could be the cause, not fuel.

Kansas, to aswer your questions:
A) Once started, does it run OK? Have good power? Stutter/stumble/die? Run as well cold as warmed up? --> yes. when the engine runs, it runs just fine.
B) Cold, does it start easily? --> yes, besides this morning with the low battery, I can count on it starting when cold.
C) When it won't start/restart, what does that mean?--does it refuse to start at all until cooled off and ambient below 80, or do you have some process for getting it started? --> this is kinda complex. When it wont start, it wont fire at all. Once the engine temp returns to the outside temp, it will restart. So maybe the 80* is misleading. I think the combination of hot engine + hot day = no start.

The accelerator pump in the carb works. On the last hot day we had, I did peer into the carb (engine was hot after a drive, then after shut-off it was not firing, car not starting) and did see the stream of fuel shoot out when I manipulated the throttle! That contradicts all my previous thinking. That showed me I have fuel and the car still wont start when hot.

As mentioned above, my next step is to check fuel pressure on a hot day when the motor is cold, and then when its hot. Also when its not starting, I'll jump it and if the battery has been the culprit this whole time, I've wasted a lot of time on the fuel system.
