Well, I dug around a little bit and here's what I found.
- The early V4's had a semi-enclosed crankcase that admitted air in through the right hand valve cover oil breather cap. It then passes thru the crankcase and then via a hose from the left hand valve cover to the air cleaner assembly.
- The later V4's, starting with engine no. 16.101 had a totally enclosed crankcase with NO oil breather cap. In this case, the air comes in thru the air cleaner via a hose to the right hand valve cover. From the left hand valve cover it goes via a hose through a PVC valve on the intermediate flange on the intake.
To make a long story short, no oil breather cap should be installed on a Sonett III. Not sure it would HARM anything; just not designed for one.
Now the PVC valve can be easily checked- remove it and shake it. If it rattles, it's probably okay. Next, if you're brave, blow into it one way and then the other- it should pass air in from the where the hose was connected and not pass air from the intermediate flange side. A one-way valve. If it's sticky, you can squirt carb cleaner in to free it up.
