Hi MadMike
I have owned a 74 sonett for about 10 years and have fixed/modified countless parts. From all my experience I would tell you this:
Driving the car is very rewarding but you have to be prepared for lots of work. I put a big carb on mine, bigger exhaust, elec fan and ignition, hotter ign coil, bigger valves, F4 cam, performance clutch, and when it was all said and done the car was still slower than a minivan. You will feel the power increase but unless you add a turbo, you wont win any races. That said, sonetts still feel fast because their size.
With a sonett you can expect an endless project (not a bad thing) which includes scouring the internet and utilizing saabnet members for parts. They are very fun cars to work on and yes you can find all the parts you will need if you look hard enough. Mark Ashcraft in Oregon is a good name to know. I have heard of Jack Lawrence in NY but have never been able to find his contact info. And of course the saabnet will supply you with any bit of information you will need. This BB has been very good to me when I fixed up my sonett.
As far as local mechanics, I can only recommend Tony at The Auto Shop in Appleton, WI. He has helped me out more times than I can recall. Mark School is a saab hobbiest in Appleton who races a sonett in Elkhart lake. There is a saab guy who lives near Cambridge. Thats east of Madison on hwy 12. I forget his name, but he was recommended to me when I had my sonett in Madison.
Good luck
