I suspect that the float valve in the carb stuck open. This may be because the fuel in the carb evaporated while the car was sitting. It may also be because the float itself is bad. However, the fact that there was no leak in the afternoon suggests the float is ok. Note that this is a problem my father was able to fix with a rock once. He applied the rock to the side of the carb with just enough vigor to free up the float. Good luck.
