To add further to Eric's great posts. Try to start the car. Hold the key over in the start position for 20-30 seconds. Then put your hand on the negative post of the battery and touch the negative cable all the way to where it is bolted to the chassis. Is it warm in any area? If not touch the braided cable from the chassis to the frame after turning the key to start again. What you are looking for is where the power is going, likely a high resistance connection which would cause excessive heat in the problem area.
It does sound like a poor ground at the starter back to the battery. Is the starter loose?
