I do use the side plug to get it right and I have an Ashcraft dipstick for checking. I did finally remove the Speedo and found fluid inside so if there is supposed to be fluid in the cable it means a seal at the speedo end failed. My guess is the seal is at the other end and hope the "new" gear will fix it. For now I'll leave the cable diconnected with a rag under the end and access lid off the dash and watch what happens. I'll also take a good look at one of my spare trannys to see if there is some type of vent.
