Hello Friends,
I'm afraid I need more advice from you experts out there. So, I bought the new starter from Classicsaabracing.com that ErikS recommended (thanks Erik). He actually had two in stock. However, when I went to install I find the solenoid which is no longer in a vertical position, but tilted off to the left toward the wheel, it crashes into a welded support on my floorboard.
I suspect this support is not original. I bought this through Bud Clark in Southern California and he said he had lowered the front end a bit. I'm guessing this support was an add-on?
Anyway, the interference is slight, maybe 2 or 3mm, so I was thinking to grind out the corner of the support. My only concern (aside from the fact that I am not a professional mechanic and just bought my first grinder) is that my engine mounts to this support, and I don't want to weaken it too much. If you look at the attached visual explanation it will make more sense.
My other option would be to just tighten the starter mounting bolts to get it to seat flush knowing it will dent the solenoid. That would be the old "sledgehammer" approach which I really don't want to do for obvious reasons.
Any advice, comments, suggestions will be most appreciated as usual.
Thanks,
-Scott
