"The "bubble" <>- is the first step in forming a double flared fitting. The second step pushes the outer part of the "bubble" <>- into the other side to form a doubled "V" >>- shape. IIRC (not having them in front of me) the instructions for the forming tool still call it a double flare. Any good automotive store has the tool."
Hi Andy, I think we are just in a little terminology muddle here. The most commonly used US brake line is commonly called a "double flare." While the maker of a forming tool may call the Saab type a "double flare," and it is as you point out formed by a two-step process, it is confusing to call it also a "double flare" and contrary to popular usage in my experience. When I called my brake supplier for info I was told promptly that the Saab type is a "bubble flare," which makes sense given its appearance. The double flare makes the end of the line into a little funnel shape (concave looking at the end of the line) that mates to a raised cone in the opposite fitting. The bubble flare is like a little ball on the end of the line that mates to a matching concave shape on the opposite fitting.
The bubble flare threads on the Saab line nuts are 3/8"-24. My supplier indicates that there is also a 10mm-1.0 bubble flare nut size available. These will look very similar to the naked eye but will not mate. I gave Bendix part #s for couplings for each style in a previous post.
Hope this adds clarity and reduces confusion.
