"...the 'Cologne' (German) engine"
Spiv,
The original Formula Ford spec was the Kent engine.
It depends on which Capri you look at. According to the 1971 Automobile Club of Italy "World Car Catalog", which lists virtally every model of every car made that year anywhere in the world, German Capri's got the same Taunus V-4 (1.3/1.5/1.7L) that SAAB used and the 2.0/2.3/2.6L V-6 engines, English built Capri's got the Kent engine in 1298cc and 1598cc versions. I believe the 1.6 is the same inline-4 as in the US imported Capri's. The Germans did have an inline-4 in 12932cc and 1592cc versions, but according to this source it wasn't put into the Capri in 1971. The only version of the Kent V-4 that I find listed that year is a 2.0L in the Capri and Zephyr models. The Kent V-6 came as a 2.5L in the Zephyr and as a 3.0L in the Capri and Zodiac. Even the Cortina 2000 GT's used the inline-4. There is no listing for the Capri under Mercury, since it wasn't built in the US, even though it was sold by Mercrummy dealers.
So what it boils down to is that ALL of the Capri's imported into the US were Kent engines, even if they were assembled in the German plant. I'm not usre that the German inline-4 would bolt up to the British gearbox, or vis-a-versa.
Now, which version of the V-6 did we get over here??
