Set Timing for beginner...

O.K., so here's the deal: I just replaced the points in my distributor with a Pertronix electronic ignition and the final instruction was to "set the timing in the usual fashion". Well, as someone who has little to no experience with cars (but I'm learning), I have never set the timing on a car before. Is this something I can do on my own? If so what do I need and anybody have advice? Is it just a matter of getting a timing light and adjusting something? BTW, I noticed after I installed the Pertronix my idle rpms went up to about 1200 or 1500, is this normal, and will adjusting the timing bring the idle rpms back down? Sorry for the inexperience and long post, but as always any advice/ideas are much appreciated.
Jeff
