Sounds like your timing is really advanced. You'll need a timing light from sears, and the owners manual/shop manual.
Hook up the timing light to the battery posts and coil lead. Loosen the distributer retaining bolt (don't remove), disconnect and plug dist. vacuum line, and start engine. Fire timing lite at top of flywheel. Rotate distributer by hand and watch for your timing marks on the distributer (lines and numbers on the flywheel). When the timing marks read factory settings, tighten distributer and check again with light and you're done! I remember advancing the timing slightly on mine for performance. Then go to a nice long hill and drive up it and listen for any detonation (engine knock). Good luck!!
