My personal choice for engine oil for many years has been Castrol 20w/50 GTX. I used 10w/50 in the winter when I lived in New England. I've never seen it in the mild Pacific Northwest. I was once told that in order to produce 50-weight multigrades the process requires a modification of the oil molecule that makes it a better lubricant than 30-weight or 40-weight multigrades. Why don't manufacturers tell you to use anything better than a 10w/30 oil? Because they want your car to wear out ahd die so that they can sell you another one. The low number is the actual viscosity, and the high number is the high temperature viscosity equivalent, i.e. that 20w/50 won't break down until it reaches the breakdown temperature of a 50-weight oil. The 10w/30 will break down at the breakdown temperature of a 30-weight oil. Which would you rather have protecting your engine?

SAAB calls for GL-4 or GL-5 specification EP80 transmission oil. It is very important to use the correct weight as a thicker oil will not flow through the bearings properly, especially when cold. DO NOT USE ENGINE OIL IN THE 95/96/97 GEARBOX!!! SAAB also specifies that you change the oil every 6 months. This is _critical_ to the life of the ball bearings in the transmission. If you don't keep the fluid clean, the bearing life will be compromised. I bought my first 96 in 1969 and I've been told by every old-timer mechanic I've run into about the importance of changing the gear oil.
