adjusting fuel/air mix

Hey all,
I think my '72 is running rich. Is it just the one screw on the carb that you turn to make the adjustment? I am hesitant to mess with it because I have been told it is fussy. I am not much of a mechanic but I do what I can. I have the factory manual but I just wanted any advice on a good way to go about it or how to tell when it's at a good fuel/air ratio. I would assume that when it's too rich you get black smoke out the tailpipe right? I also assume that if it's too lean it will miss. Does that sound right?
Also, I have a broken driving light (behind the grille). Is that a pretty standard size to get at an auto parts store or would I have to order it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tyler
