I am 28 years old and have owned two Sonetts, a 1968 V4 and a 1973 Sonett III. The 1973 Sonett was my first car. My Dad purchased it for me when I was 18. When we got it, the guy that previous owner managed to stockpile a bunch of parts, many of which were from a 1968 Saab.
As Sonett owners must out of necessity, I began to perform research on Sonetts. I saw pictures of the earlier versions of the Sonett and fell in love. As soon as I graduated from college and had a steady job, I purchased the 1968 Sonett from Pennsylvania and had it shipped all the way to Colorado.
The car was in shambles. A doctor previously owned it. He planned on restoring it, however, he ended up dying of cancer. I took it as my mission to complete the restoration on his behalf. I didn't realize how much time and money it would take to restore this car. Unfortunately, there are some people out there who take advantage of the rarerity of these cars and overcharge for parts. I ended up having to sell my Sonett III to pay for the bills I had accumulated from restoring the 1968 Sonett V4.
I finally finished the restoration on the '68 Sonett this past year.
I must admit, I learned more restoring this car than I did in four years of college. Sonetts are a great project because they are not greatly mechanically complicated, yet they offer enough of a challenge to keep the average weekend mechanic challenged. I recently had the chance to buy a Porsche 911, which has always been my true dream car. Unfortunately, I had to sell the Sonett to pay for the Porsche. Maybe later in life when I have more money to spare, I can have another Sonett. It is very difficult to be a young Sonett owner because you must have another daily driver. This is especially true in the harsh winters. It also gets to be very expensive. To all those Sonett owners out there, you are all troopers. It takes a special person to own a Sonett; a person who thrives on exploration; A person who appreciates uniqueness; and a person who has the patience to perservere while they wait for rare parts and service. I will miss the thrill of driving my Sonett.
