I agree, it's hard to see how the throwout/release bearing could be the cause if it makes the noise when the clutch pedal is OUT. When the clutch is out, the clutch slave cylinder is fully retracted, the release fork pulls back from the clutch disc, and the release bearing just sits there in the fork.

The input shaft does run through a hole in the release bearing, so I guess if it has broken up really badly it could be dragging on the input shaft as it rotates. Never seen that happen, though.

The mainshaft bearing does seem like the likeliest candidate, but if the grinding occurs when the freewheel is doing its thing, that could be another possibility...?
