Sonett V4 column shifter vs. floor shifter

It's been a long while since I've posted. The current prob with my '69 Sonett V4 is the column shifter is broken. After attempts to refurbish / weld / rebuild the housing and internal parts something still isn't right. So I'm contemplating putting a floor shifter in from a 70+ sonett. I know that many say "keep everything stock", but on this car there are already several non-stock items (e.g., tranny is from a 96, I rebuilt the engine and upgradeed to 1700cc pistons, interior is a replaced, etc). It also seems that unless these cars have been in a museum or barn for the past 37 years, keeping *everything* stock is nearly impossible. I plan on also pulling a 96 column shifter off a parts car, so I have both options...
I'm wondering what you folks thoughts are? From what I understand the conversion is fairly simple: replace the tranny top cover with a 70+ Sonett cover, and bolt on the new shifter. I'll probably fabricate a metal housing to make the install look more appropriate for the floor layout of the '69.
Any photos from anyone else who has done this? Or tips, suggestions, or reasons why not to do this?
