I did the seal replacement on one side about a year ago without yanking the engine on my 68, definately easier than removing the engine. If both need replacement and input shaft seal is suspect then yanking the engine is the way to go. I'm also not sure how much harder the engine in method is with a bonnet in the way or how much extra effort there is in removing it.
