Hi Craig,
I recently completed a re-build on a 1700 sonett engine. I have a lightened flywheel on both my sonetts and drivability has not been affected. The increased response is nice. As far as engine internals, I had oversized pistons put in, all new engine bearings, heavy duty oil pump, F66 cam, and reworked heads put in toped by a weber carb. I slowly collected the parts, then had the machine shop do the actual machine work then I assembled the actual components. I also used this opportunity to clean and paint the engine compartment. I also replaced the cluth and hydrolics, and a new clutch flex line from WSS. If you are willing to do the research and spend some money it is really worth it. The sonett is much quicker yet is still drivable. It is quite loud with MSS exaust on it, but a system with two mufflers are an option, but I really like the sound. If you are considering the rebuild, the Cam is makes and great difference, and putting in hardened valveseats so the car can run on unleaded gas is conveinent.....sorry if this seems rambleing i'm trying to put down all my thoughts. The fast V4 book from Jack Ashcraft might help you decide how much you want to do. Also if you decide to do the rebuild, Jack's engine overhaul and repair manual was a lifesaver and has helped many times since. The sonett has alot of potential for performance, and i'm glad I did upgrade, makes the car more drivable in my opinion. Good Luck. -Craig
