Pat,
I also play with British cars that have SU fuel pumps. People who know them well say never to put a fuel filter on the suction side of the pump. The reasoning is that if the filter plugs, it leaves the pump energized trying to do something it can't do, so it burns up.
Whether you should or shouldn't place a filter on the suction side depends upon the type of pump.
