My reading on exhaust back pressure seems to say that lower back pressure does result in better performance. However, along with lower back pressure you can also experience leaner fuel/air mixtures (because the engine is pulling in more air due to the increased exhaust efficiency) and this lean mixture can cause burned valves. Also in my reading, I see that modern computer-controlled cars automatically compensate for this and increase the fuel mix to achieve and maintain the correct fuel/air mix that a carburated engine cannot do on its own. It seems to me that if you have access to an exhaust gas analyzer you could increase the exhaust size as much as you want as long as the exhaust gas measures correctly. If you do a web search for "exhaust back pressure" you can find several articles on the subject.
