The modern VIN system did not exist in 1969.
The 1969 Sonett V4 has 3 or 4 identification markings:
1. engine ID stamped on the right side of the engine block - six digits and NOT THE SAME NUMBER as the chassis ID
2. chassis ID imprinted on a metal plate that is riveted to the passenger side of the engine bay panel near the heater; a second riveted plate indicates the assembly plant, and sometimes there is also a third plate with body color codes
3. chassis ID stamped on the left side of the top radiator plate
4. chassis ID plate riveted on the interior passenger side windshield support (not on all models)
The chassis ID is what DMVs now consider the "VIN". In 1969, manufacturers created their own ID systems, and Saab designated an 8-digit sequence for the Sonett, with the first two digits of "97" indicating the internal model number of the Sonett, following by "00" as a placekeeper (meaning, if any, not known), and then the 4-digit production sequence, starting with 1000.
Thus, the first 1969 Sonett "VIN" was 97001000 and the last one made in 1969 was 97001868.
So look for a number 9700xxxx where "xxxx" is your Sonett sequence. DMVs with probably accept either the full chassis ID or just your sequence number.
