Thanks again for everyone's help. There was a VIN plate on the passenger A-pillar. I geuss this makes it obvious that I never sat in the car when I bought it. :o)
I knew there had to be a plate on the car somewhere because the car is all original (except for possibly the engine since they gave me a spare with the car) and I have all of the service records back to '76. The car is # 1788 so it looks like it was one of the last ones built in the II/V4 body style.
