I had a friend who had a mid 80's 3 series (318?) BMW with a bent wheel on the back of his car. He said "no problem...I've been driving with that for years". The car had over 300,000 miles on it.
One day I come out of the apartment and the whole rear of the car is sitting extremely low. Upon further inspection the whole shock mount had broken every weld at the trunk floor. Took it to a friend's body shop and he re-welded the mount after a good bit of work. He claimed that the vibrations from the damaged wheel put a good bit of stress on the whole housing and the welds failed over time.
I didn't think it was possible but this made me a believer. Now any time I have a bent wheel I get it fixed!
