2004 9-3 Arc, manual, 23K
A strange rattle with a somewhat metallic sound developed late today in the engine compartment (or at least in the front right third of the car as near as I can tell). It appears to be audible only at 40 mph and above. It does not worsen over bumpy roads, nor does it decrease over smooth roads. Acceleration does not increase the amount of noise. Performance does not seem to be affected. I turned off all A/C, etc.to listen better, the glove box is empty, no coins in the trays or compartments, nothing in the trunk. No extra keys on the ring. The car is empty as I vacuumed it out and washed the car earlier today.

When I first heard it I thought it had the sound of an engine with a bad tank of gas, that clicky-sputtery - knocking sound, but that's all it seems to be is sound. The car is running strong with no hesitation. Cannot hear it when parked and idling, even when I step on the gas and rev it up. Also might be described as sounding a bit like when the dishwasher isn't loaded right and so silverware hits against something, if you know what I mean. No specific rhythym/pattern to the sound. I expect and won't freak out over a few rattles and clicks in the car, I just don't want to ignore something that could cause damage.
Is there anything I can try to help pinpoint it before calling the service department? Should I avoid driving the car? Anything I should be extra careful about?
