Hi Ali,
Indeed the 1/8" jack you had installed won't allow for controling the iPod through your steering wheel or factory stereo. Believe me, if Saab or anyone else releases a relavtively affordable, simple adapter that allows this, SaabNet will be ablaze with info.
Unlike others in this thread, I would recommend going with the Belkin AutoKit (available at Apple Stores, Circuit City, Best Buy, just about everywhere) that you plug into your iPod's dock port, not the headphone jack. This gives you two advantages over the headphone patch cables:
- Your audio is coming from the iPod's "line-out" rather than the headphone jack, meaning cleaner audio and you can adjust the volume more precisely using the Saab's controls (including the steering wheel).
- The AutoKit also charges/powers the iPod, which is invaluable if you're fairly lax about charging your iPod as I am. The power comes from the cigarette lighter in the center console, which makes for a nice, hidden package.
There are things similar to the AutoKit out there, I just trust and like Belkin hardware.
