Simple....A real Saab engine simply is one that Saab has over a period time in order to properly develop it. IE..I had an '82, first year of APC, that ran perfect as long as I had it 125K...and, it went on to go 360K with the person that bought it from me..last I heard. The 16 valves were the same. Particularly the B234R. They run forever if maintained properly. the two new engines being used are a little under developed at this point. If they get the attention they deserve they could be the best ever.
I will say this....The orientation of the global 4 in the 9-3 is poorly thought out. Difficult to service.
