First - the current situation with the car -

Its at the dealer and waiting on parts. It may be that they were trying to replace the control module first (the $350 price I remember) or it may be that I misunderstood what made up the $600 or so that it was going to cost to repair the car.

Service manager said that the part is on backorder and none of the regional dealers had them. He said he went on to some "parts network" and none were available nationwide.

Ok - Here are the details of every weird thing the transmission did -

The first time the transmission did something weird was in the rain when I had to quickly get up to speed from a stop and the Traction Control System kicked in on the wet street. When it kicked in, it felt more like hitting the clutch on a manual transmission - so the revs went up to around 4500 and I let off the gas instictively. Still needing to get up to speed, I hit the gas again and it was still free revving - then hit into gear harder than usual. Keep in mind that the car was in D the whole time. This would have been around 45000 - 50000 miles.

After this occurence, I would occasionally get a little shudder from the drivetrain while traveling at around 45 mph. Sort of like driving over the indentions on the side of a highway at speed - but MUCH more subtle. It was not a troubling, just sort of a vibration that lasted for about a second. My current thinking is that it could have been related to the torque converter locking up at highway speed - which is what its supposed to do.

The next occurence was a transmission slip when turning off of a highway and hitting the gas. It was in either 2nd or 3rd gear and just slipped a bit as I went over a dip in the road and the cars suspension unloaded and reloaded with weight. Not a big deal - thought it was the slip talked about here.

At some point after 55,000 miles, the transmission got a little more clunky when I went from P thru R to D.

At 60,000 and change, the transmission started shifting strangely after a 3 hour drive. My wife was off of the highway and back into stop and go driving and it started getting confused about when to shift between 1st 2nd and 3rd. All of the symptons went away after parking and restarting the car several hours later. Over the next two days in the city there were no problems. She drove home and there were no more symptons.

Five days later, I drove about an hour at highway speeds and then got into town. At the first stop light, the car started shifting between 1st and 2nd erratically. Parking for 20 minutes restored normal function. The next day, it started shifting strangely and finally displayed the Gearbox malfunction warning. At this point I was in limp home mode - and then proceeded to limp home without any problems.

At this point, the car is still sort of driveable. It is stuck in limp home mode - but at least it can be moved.
