I'm gonna' have to take you to task on the BMW vs Saab resale issue. Fist the dealer stole your Saab as a trade. That's "six grand back" in SoCal used car lingo. The Saab books for around $20k and the equivilant 330i books for around $25k. Say the Saab is $3k "softer" than the BMW, that's an $8k difference not the $12k you suggest.

But I'm gonna' use your figures to make the same point. The Saab depreciated $12,950 in real dollars, $26.7k - $13.75k = $12,950. Using the $25k estimated 330i trade-in, could you have gotten a 330i with premium and sport packages, the equivalent of the Saab, for $38k? That is $25k resale plus $12,950 depreciation = $38k. I don't think a 330i was quite that cheap, a 325i maybe, but not a 330i.

So you woulda' paid over $10k more ($14k more I'd say) to achieve the same total depreciation. But your resale figures are way outa' whack. The dealer stole your Vector, I'da paid about $2k more for the car here, $15-16k easy, good CPO'able mechandise. And we just took in a 2003 330i for $18k with slightly more miles than the $25k you dream the BMW might be worth.

The percentages will always look better for the BMW because they trade for closer to sticker as they're are not the massive incentives used to sell Saabs, and they go for closer to book used for the same reason. Resale percentages are calculated as a percentage of MSRP so the percentages will always favor BMW, but BMW's depreciate too.

So that's what I call German arithmetic. Pay $10k more for the equivalent BMW/Mercedes and it might be worth $5-8k more after 3 years. More total dollar depreciation for a car that isn't as satisfying for many of us.

That's the market right now too. A 2006 9-3 Aero is $32-36k and a 330i is $40-48k, about $10k difference. And thankfully past the first model year for Saab, but not the BMW.

In fairness a 2006 E90 is one helluva' nice car and is availble in AWD, BMW has a much greater market coverage than Saab. A 9-3SS trumped the E46 model BMW you coulda' had in 2003, but the all new 2006 E90's are sweet, just considerably more expensive. A 9-3 Aero goes for close to what a strippee 325 goes for this year, purchase and lease.
