My 2000 9-5 had a recommended change at 1,500 miles (IIRC), then 10,000 intervals after that. I have always performed oil changes at 5,000 miles intervals, using synthetic, and have over 172,000 miles on my 9-5 with no problems. When I pulled the valve cover on that engine early last year to replace the head bolts in response to reports of weak and under torqued bolts, the cams and other engine internals still looked like new.
Do a search for "engine sludge" and you will know why not to trust extended oil change intervals. Some of those cars reportedly had oil changes performed at Saab's recommended intervals. There are also documented cases early in the 9-3SS history of Saab's oil life algorithm being faulty and over estimating the useful life remaining, resulting in costly engine damage - sometimes outside the warranty window.
Who creates the statement that oil will not need to be changed for 10,000+ miles? The engine designers or the advertising department? I keep my cars well past the 100,000 mile point (my current goal is 300,000 miles for my 9-5) and am willing to pay for the extra protection the more frequent oil changes provide.
