I have 175,300 miles on my 2000 9-5 (only 3,200 on my wife's 2006 9-3SC) and have never waited to cool down the turbo prior to turning the engine off. Now, realize that I have always deliberately driven sane and sensibly the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile prior to turning off the engine so the water cooling and oil cooling loops within the turbo can do their job properly.
I have always used a quality synthetic oil in my car, the only exception being the "free" Saab oil changes performed by the Dealer during the first 30,000 miles when Saab was still recommending a semi-synthetic oil for my engine, and changed both oil and filter at 5,000 mile intervals.
BTW - my 9-5 still has it's original turbo and no blue smoke.
