I couldn't discern in the body of your rant what exactly the symptoms were so as to point you in the right direction for a rememdy. Doesn't work how, doesn't unlock the doors, doesn't start the car.

That old fashioned key was down on the floor often amoung the coffee, soft drinks, dirt and muck and needed to release the shifter out of reverse. And it still used the same ancient tech lead acid battery to start the car, an often iffy proposition still to this day.
