Hey AeroDave,
In your picture its clear that a) the underside of the cover is both painted in the same way as the inside of the doors, hood, trunk, gas tank access door etc AND has a "material" cover over the center. That looks like the way I would imagine it SHOULD be.
MINE on the other hand, has NO black under covering (as yours appears to have) - similar to what exists under the hood, and trunk lid.
Also, if it DID have such a cover (I assume it's that sortof "felt" material) underneith, which it should, sadly it would make a big difference asthetically. In my case, the "electric blue" "20 years" paint is only roughly and lightly over-sprayed along the edges of the underside.
The over spray doesn't provide full color coverage over the grey primer anywhere, and is spotty and sloppy, so the black felt cover you'ld exect to find there would still leave the two or three exposed inches around the outside edges of the underside looking shoddy as hell.
I'll try to post a pic of mine tomorrow.
COMEON GM... The spirits of the "16 aircraft engineers" you love to make reference to must be rolling over in their graves! They made 500 "20 years" units... if it cost $100 a unit to cheap out on the finish this way, they saved a whopping 50 grand on the car that is supposed to be a celebration of their "showpiece". Shameless.
Oh, and someone asked "who looks underneith the tonneau cover"... Well, first, *I* - the guy who chose this car over the BMW, Volvo, and AUDI watch in the rearview -maybe because I'm still fascinated - but also to make sure I'm not going to hit anything.
And I feel RIPPED OFF by GM/SAAB every time I do. But morover, passengers, especially car enthusiasts CAN'T not look - the mechanics are too cool to ignore. (they like to call it the "robocop effect" :)
Unfortunately, each person who sees it quickly changes attitude from "wow, amazing mechanical art SAAB" to "hey.. what's wrong with the paint - is SAAB to cheap to finish it?"
MSRP in Canada for my model $65,000.00 They should have charged me $65,100.00 - I would have been very happy to pay the hundred for a decent paint job.
Maybe they ran out of blue paint on that day and hoped no one would notice ;)
Either way, there's no excuse for sloppy work. It's not as bad when it's hidden as long as it doesn't effect operational quality. But if someone bought a car and had to see what I see every time they opened their trunk, hood, etc. they'd think they bought a skoda. The tonneau cover is no different.
Ok, enough bitching. Did I mention that this care is, in fact, really great, and that's WHY I hate the cut corners?? If I weren't a BIG FAN, I wouldn't CARE so much!
Anyway, I'd love info on what they got from anyone else who has the current version of the 'vert. After seeing this photo, it's obvious to me that I'm getting a raw deal.
Thanks again!!!
Earl
