My experience is strictly ancecdotal, but on ocassion, I dropped from 91 (in my 2.0t) to 89, and once or twice to 87, and noticed a marked increase in fuel consumption. Now, it may be that the ECU needs a few tankfulls to optimize, and then the mileage may increase and stabilize, but I figure why bother? The higher octane fuels (supposedly) have added fuel system cleaners etc, and I figure (strictly hypothetical,) that this may save me having to clean the fuel system/injectors every year or so. That used to be a $100 charge in my previous car. That covers a lot of the cost difference to using 91 octane.
I can believe Mike's supposition of 5% fuel consumption difference. I noticed a marked difference during the hot summer months. That said, there was little, if any difference during the winter months.
