As was mentioned in other posts - this is just an auto transmission that you can force to go a gear up or down. There is quite a bit of protection built into software to prevent you from damaging the engine and or transmission. In manual mode the car will downshift automatically under braking but will not do it under acceleration. You can downshift to get in the correct gear before you need to accelerate and you can upshift to the next gear if you are not expecting any sudden changes in speed. Upshifts are not done automatically, so you can reach a rev-limit by keeping a car in a gear too long while accelerating. You will now that you are at rev limit as the car will suddenly stop accelerating and your face will be much closer to the windshield than before - but that is to protect the engine.
Over 3.5 years I used the manual mode 10 or 20 times, last beeing about a week ago during snow - quite nice to slow down without using brakes.
