To me, that's like asking why cars have airbags or ABS brakes. Those now widely accepted safety features were first questioned when they initially came out, too-partly because their cost to install. DRLs cost carmakers nothing to employ, and provide an additional safety measure that is beneficial to all.

It's all about being S-E-E-N.

Cars with DRLs are more visible to oncoming traffic than cars w/o DRLs. With DRLs on, other drivers can better judge your car's distance and speed-thus, making said driver thinking twice about pulling out in front of you from a side street at the last second, or when lane changing-for example. Anything that will reduce the likelihood of some otherwise inattentive driver to pull out in front of me is a good thing, IMHO.

In fact, the other day a car in front me attempted to change lanes and then suddenyl whipped back in their lane when they bothered to look in the in their rear view mirror and saaw how fast I was approaching in my Aero SC. I'm certain my HID headlights had something to do with that inattentive driver's second thoughts about changing lanes (didn't help that they were yapping on their cellphone-ARGH!). I'm sure we've all been victim to that scenario....

As I have driven with my lights on since I first started driving as a teenager, it just makes sense to me. I was fortunate that my early driving experience also included driving a SAAB, a '82 900T. I loved that in that car you could leave the headlights on and that they'd shut off when I turned off the car so I just always left them on.

It's bad enough that I find some people who don't turn on their headlights at dusk or in the rain, for example. If DRLs (like ABS and airbags before it) need to be mandated if only to save the neglectful driver from himself and reduce the risk of accidents in the process at an modest cost over the life of the car-then I'm all for it.

It's like carping over the replacement cost of high performance tires....but that's another peeve of mine for another time. ;)
