If the battery is weak, it might only be enough juice in it to crank over and start the car but during that process, the voltage drops so low that all the computers throughout the car goes crazy including the fuel management one.
When the engine starts up, it takes awhile for the alternator to bring the voltage up above "life sustaining" level and make the computers work again.
People need to look at modern cars as a PC with all the glitches that can happen if it gets a power outage or "brown out".
Batteries in today's cars needs to be replaced more often due this (every 3-4 years).
