It all depends but 3month/3K miles is not really relevant anymore but only a sales tactic of the quick lube places to make money and stay away from liability with the cheap oil that they are using.

I use 6 month/5K miles as a general rule for all customers but with the 9-3SS and likewise they use 6 quarts of oil compared to the older Saabs and some newer 9-5s too which use 4 quarts so that means it have more oil to begin with.

If you drive a lot in short time I have no problem with 10K miles or 6 month whichever comes first but if you only drive 5 K in 6 month it is good to stick to the 6 month rule anyway.

It is other things in this whole scenario that usually gets forgotten and that is that some car engines burn more oil than others so if you are set on 10 or 15K intervals and one year but never check the oil on a regular basis (since the shop can't do it because you are not there as often), then you might run out of oil before your miles or time are.

Brakes, hoses, belts and stuff like that also gets neglected since the car doesn't see a shop as often.

Everything is fine and dandy when the car is brand new but when time goes on, these cars are also gonna get old with lots of miles and the long oil change interval might not be such a good idea anymore.

And we all know that the car manufacturer have stopped being interested by then when the factory warrnty is over.
