Since Opel is a fairly popular brand of automobile in Europe our friends across the pond have a variety of oil choices they can select from, none of which are commonly available in North America.
Since Opel is not sold in the US (yet), we have only one choice - the single brand of oil approved for use by DSaab ealerships. Combine the relative scarity of Saabs (with the 2.0l Saab specific Opel engines) in the US, the "free" scheduled maintenance (not too many owners changing their own oil) in the US, and the cost associated for an oil blender to submit a product for testing to the Opel spec, and you can see why there is nothing other than the 0W/30 (or is it 0W/40?) Mobil 1 approved here.
Since Saturn will soon start selling the Antwerp bult Opel Corsa here in the US & Canada as the Saturn corsa with its Opel engine, we may start to see additional oil brands/blends carrying the GM-LL-A-025 approval.
I e-mailed the Opel lubrication engineer responsible for this specification last month seeking additional information on GM-LL-A-025 oils. In particular I was curious to know any US brands/blends which had been tested and found to fail. No response in nearly 4 weeks so I don't expect to learn what I was seeking.
In the meantime I will continue to use a quality synthetic oil in a reasonable weight for my climate and driving conditions, and ignore the absence of the GM-LL-A-025 stamp on the jugs.
