Without question, the '06 9-3 will be far more reliable than any Viggen. Where to start?
Major systems: The chassis was designed from scratch to meet Saab's requirements, and the engine was designed from scratch to meet Saab's requirements, and the (Aero 6-speed) transmission was designed from scratch to accomodate the current Aero engine. All of the above, on the Viggen, were drived from earlier designs and adapted, with greater or lesser success, to accomodate the Viggen. That said, the 5-speed Viggen transmission is pretty well developed, having been upgraded several times to handle the 9000 Aero engine. That same unit is the 5-speed in the '06 2.0T, but even so, GM upgraded the synchronizers and oil specification when the 9-3SS was launched, and it handles the 9-5's power and torque with good reliability. In particular, the chassis is far superior in terms of rigidity of both the body and the steering components.
Electronics: No SID issues, no DI issues.
Interior trim, espcecially seat trim, is the one area where the Viggen will put the newer car to shame. But over the medium run, say the first 10 years of ownership, I don't think it will be a reliability issue.
