I recall watching a 20/20 episode years back which claimed that windshield glass is relied upon by manufacturers to provide structural stiffness so that they can cheapen the pillars. As such, if the replacement windshield is not installed properly, or is deficient in some other way, it may pop out during a crash/roll over, and the pillars cannot alone bear the car's weight, causing the car to crush and harming the occupants. The report even concluded that the replacment glass installers should wear gloves during the installation to prevent contaminating the seal - which they also claimed caused windshield failure during accidents. In short, it may cost you more, but make sure the glass and the installation is above board and proper.
