The Trionic ECU adjusts the turbo boost for fuel quality.
Optimum turbo boost is achieved with premium unleaded, as it is less prone to produce "engine knock" than regular unleaded. When engine knock is detected, Trionic reduces the boost pressure to eliminate the knock.
Thus, the higher the octane-the better the boost.
This was first intro'ed in the 1982 900 Turbo with APC (Automatic Performance Control), and later incorporated into Trionic. I had a '82 900T and the power difference was noticeable between the different grades. Over the years, I've just stuck with premium.
If you want your SAAB Turbo operating at peak efficiency (and power on demand all the time), premium (super) unleaded is the way to go....
