i bought my 06 9-3 aero a month or so ago with 4400 miles on it. from my understanding, the prev owner had not changed the oil since new. i asked the dealer when they would do the 1st change and they said 10k miles. i did not want to wait that long, especially on the 1st change, so i did it last weekend at 6200 miles; and i'm glad i did. the filter was pretty well spent as the fins were sucked tight and even wavy instead of straight up and down (indicating it was pretty full). i also noted some sludge around the threads of the filter housing (v6 is on the bottom). finally, the oil that came out was pretty black and was at least 6.5 quarts (the v6 only takes 6 quarts, not 6.3 like the 2.0l engine).
i'm not willing to take the chance that the factory installed oil is good on a newly assembled engine for 10k miles. even though machine work is better now-a-days and a true "break-in" period on a new engine is less necessary, there is still a good chance that the intial build of the engine will be less than perfectly clean. the synthetic oil initially installed may not break down as quickly as dino oil, but it will carry particulates through the engine just as easily as dino oil will. and if the filter is clogged at 6000 miles, running for the next 4000 miles bypassing the filter just doesn't seem smart.
my 2 cents
