No, you are not an idiot, it is a convertible so it is the old body style and the post belongs on the NG900/OG9-3 board instead.
Yes it sounds like it could be a gear selector switch.
It is very rare that the +50 pin on ignition switch die on these cars. It is way more common that the +15 or +54 goes south and on occasions, the +X which kills the headlight circuit on a 9-3.
What a hoot, drilling a hole in the PNP switch and fill it with ATF. Never heard that one. But I guess it might work.
It's so sad that the maker of this gear selector switch filled it with a dielectric grease that goes bad with age.
